International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

What is ICIMOD

ICIMOD is the first international organisation to make a commitment to improve the living conditions of mountain inhabitants in a sustainable way, helping them to live and not merely exist upon the highest wonders on earth. The Centre is multidisciplinary, area-focussed and mountain-based; it concentrates mainly on the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region. ICIMOD has much to offer, to the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region as well as to other mountain egions facing similar problems.

ICIMOD was established in 1981 based upon an agreement between His Majesty's Government of Nepal and UNESCO signed in 1981. The Centre was inaugurated in December 1983 and began operating in September 1984. Nepal, the Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland, and UNESCO were the founding sponsors.
