APRSAF-17 Successfully Closed in Melbourne, Australia, November 23-26, 2010

The seventeenth session of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-17), under the main theme entitled "The role of space technology and industry in addressing climate change" successfully closed its 4-day program on November 26, 2010, at the Crown Conference Centre, in Melbourne, Australia.

APRSAF-17 was jointly organized and co-hosted by the Department of Innovation Industry Science and Research (DIISR) of Australia, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Approximately 230 delegates from 23 countries and region and 11 international organizations were in attendance.

At the Plenary session on Day 3, following the Opening Remarks by Dr. Michael Green, General Manager, Innovation and Space Branch, Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), Australia, the two Key Note Addresses were expressed by Ms. Patricia Kelly, Deputy Secretary, Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), Australia and Dr. Tetsuhiko Ikegami, Chairman, Space Activities Commission (SAC), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan, and the Special Address was delivered by Mr. Arjun Thapan, Special Senior Advisor for Infrastructure and Water Office of the President, Asian Development Bank (ADB), respectively.

By association with the main theme, a panel discussion on climate change was held on Day 3 and it served as an opportunity to exchange opinions actively among delegates. As another new approach, it had the Special Session on "Regional Capacity Building Programs"; Japan and India introduced their capacity building programs.
