* 2. News on APRSAF: 6th SAFE WS held in KL
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

The 6th Space Applications for Environment (SAFE) workshop was held in the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on April 23, 2014. The workshop was co-hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), National Space Agency of Malaysia (ANGKASA), and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The workshop was attended by 44 participants from 22 organizations.

The review board screened five new proposals, made suggestions and comments, and asked that the proposals be re-submitted. Six on-going prototyping projects presented their progress reports.

This workshop was held in conjunction with the 7th IGRSM International Conference and Exhibition on Remote Sensing & GIS (IGRSM2014) held from April 21 to 22, 2014. Several SAFE prototyping executers and technical supporters reported their results at the SAFE Session of IGRSM 2014. One paper submitted by one of SAFE colleagues, Dr. Rizatus Shofiyati, ICALRD, Indonesia, was awarded the “Best Paper” Award of the IGRSM 2014.

* 5. ALOS-2 successfully launched
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 “DAICHI-2” (ALOS-2) was successfully launched by the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 24 (H-IIA F24) on May 24, 2014 from the Tanegashima Space Center.

ALOS-2 developmentally succeeds the ALOS missions that contributed to various fields, including cartography, regional observation, disaster monitoring, and resource surveys. It carries the state-of-the-art L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR-2), providing improved spatial resolution (spotlight mode: 1-3m/high-resolution mode: 3-10m), all weather, day-and-night observations. The observable areas of ALOS were broadened to 2,320km. The revisit time was reduced to 14 days.

* 6. KazSat-3 and KazEOSat-1 successfully launched
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On April 28, 2014, a telecommunication satellite, KazSat-3, was launched by the Proton-M launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

On April 30, the Kazakhstani first earth observation satellite, KazEOSat-1, was launched by the third Vega launcher from the Guiana Space Center. This satellite will create a constellation with KazEOSat-2 to be launched later in 2014, providing Kazakhstan with civilian capabilities, including resource monitoring and management, land-use mapping, and environmental monitoring. The first images from the satellite have been received.

* 7. LAPAN to establish a nano sat program
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On April 2, 2014, the Chairman of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia (LAPAN), Dr. Thomas Djamaluddin, announced at an inter-ministerial meeting that the research and development of satellite technology was one of the major research pillars of LAPAN, and it acquired space technologies in order to enhance their national capabilities; Indonesia will soon begin a demonstration program, called the Indonesian Nano Satellite (InaSAT).

He also stated that the successful launch of LAPAN-TUBSAT, LAPAN's first small earth observation satellite, on January 10, 2007 had led to the independent development of LAPAN-A2, another small earth observation satellite which would be launched in mid-2014. Due to this, all the procedures for developing LAPAN-A3, LAPAN-A4, and LAPAN-A5 such as development, assembly, test, and launch would be conducted in Indonesia.
