Start of the delivery mission for Japanese Experiment Module Kibo

Space Shuttle Endeavour, with JAXA astronaut Takao Doi onboard, was successfully launched at 3:28 p.m. (Japan Standard Time) on March 11.
The 1J/A (STS-123) is the first Kibo delivery mission to the International Space Station (ISS), and the Experiment Logistics Module Pressurized Section (ELM-PS) of Kibo was attached to the ISS on March 14.
Kibo consists of five major elements, namely the Pressurized Module (PM), the ELM-PS, the Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS), the Exposed Facility (EF) and the Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section (ELM-ES).
The second Kibo delivery mission 1J (STS-124), which will transport the PM and the JEMRMS to the ISS, is scheduled to be launched on May 25, 2008 (EDT).
The remaining parts will be launched in 2009.
Through three Shuttle missions, all Kibo parts will be delivered and attached to the ISS.

Kibo will be used for various experiments such as microgravity science, life science, space science, Earth observation, and technology demonstrations by using the unique aspects of space, such as microgravity, space radiation, vast field of view, and high vacuum that are completely different from the environment on Earth. We also plan to implement commercial, educational and cultural activities using the unique characteristics of the orbiting facilities.
We expect the results of these experiments will enrich our industries and lives on the ground in the 21st century.
