The 11th Session of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum
Meeting Details
In recent activities of the Earth Observation Summit and the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), it has been globally recognized that the importance of contributing to the collection and provision of more advanced and beneficial observation information thorough the use of leading-edge space technologies, and the promotion of capacity building in developing countries, in order to take appropriate measures for various global issues such as global warming, water cycle change and natural disasters.
On the basis of such movements in the world, APRSAF intends to work as a forum to make further expansion of space development and applications in the Asia-Pacific region, by gathering opinions widely from this region. Under the main theme of "Toward Expansion of the Space Community", the APRSAF-11 was held on November 3 to 5, 2004, at the National Convention Centre, Canberra, Australia. More than 100 local and Asia-Pacific participants and observers gathered this Forum.

Summary Report of APRSAF-11
The opening ceremony consisted of five address from Dr. Geoff Garrett(Chief Executive, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia), The Hon. Dr. Bredan Nelson, MP (Australian Government Minister for Education, Science and Training ), Dr. Hiroki Matsuo (Vice Chairman, Commissioner, Space Activities Commission (SAC), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan), Mr Kiyoshi Higuchi(Executive Director, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Japan) and Prof. Andrew Parfitt (Chief Executive Officer, The Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems(CRCSS)). In addition, APRSAF-11 participants have given self-introductions.
The first day of this forum, four speeches were addressed. And in the afternoon, speakers of the two side events on "Technical Workshop on Satellite Application for Effective Disaster Reduction "and" Information Exchange Meeting for Small Satellite Development", and the CRCSS Workshop, which have been held on November 2, were addressed.
Japanese chairpersons of the three working-groups (Earth observation, Communication Satellite Applications, Space Education and Awareness) reported on the efforts which they have conducted since APRSAF-10 (Thailand, January, 2004).
The evening reception of the first day was hosted by CRCSS.
The second day, continued on the first day, eight speeches were addressed. And in the afternoon, the three working group (Earth Observation, Communication Satellite Applications, Space Education and Awareness) were held respectively.
At the each working group sessions, discussions to the future cooperation were held.

The evening reception of the second day was hosted by MEXT. There were many greetings by participants. It was also gave us relaxed time.
In the morning of the third day, two speeches were addressed and the summary reports of each working group were submitted to the general chairpersons and participants. As the result of the discussion based upon the working groups summary reports, and through discussion among the participants, the recommendations and action items were adopted, which we should implement towards the next APRSAF-12:

Space Education Forum
The free public event titled "Space Education Forum" was held as a side-event of APRSAF-11, which is based on the Space Education & Awareness Working Group's activity, supported by the Questacon and CRCSS.
This event was designed for students and the general public who want to:
- Learn how satellites provide access to services we use in every day life, for communications, navigation, weather forecasting and environmental management
- Learn how wonderful space environment is
- Learn how earth observation from space allows us to view and manage our natural resources or track emergency situations such as bushfires
- Learn how NASA's education program brings the benefits of space exploration down to Earth
- Space Education Forum between Questacon and MeSci
